3×3 (pronounced three-ex-three) Basketball is continuing to rise as one of the most popular urban team sports in the world. The 3×3 format has been played in streets and gyms for decades, including a streetball competition run by Adidas as far back as 1992. In 2007, FIBA (International Basketball Federation) first experimented with a 3×3 competition and almost 15 years later, it was introduced at the Tokyo Olympic games.

The benefits of 3×3 basketball are substantial, not only from an on-court point of view, but as an alternative for cities and clubs who lack access to high-end facilities. To play, athletes only need six players (4 per team if you carry a substitute), a half court and one basketball ring which can typically be found outdoors in communities around the world. The style of game targets the young, urban demographic but is being introduced to junior athletes from as early as 5 years due to the proven developmental advantages.

The on-court benefits of playing 3×3 basketball compared to 5×5 include:

  • Less players on court = more involvement from each player
  • More chances to touch the ball = more fun
  • More Space on court = more opportunities to score or create
  • Increased amount of activity for each player = higher fitness levels
  • One sub per team = less sitting on the bench
  • Quick changeover from offence to defence = improved reaction times
  • No time to rest = improved mental resilience, must focus on ‘next play’

Chase Basketball introduced 3×3 to all seven of our High School Basketball academies last week, with an intra academy tournament at every school.

Along with the benefits listed above, Chase Coaches also noted:

  • Increased levels of engagement amongst athletes
  • Increased attendance across the week
  • Increased communication and passing amongst teammates
  • Players challenged to work together to problem solve
  • Increased social interactions (high fives, praise etc)

The Chase Team looks forward to introducing the 3×3 format into all Chase programs in 2023.

Basketball is Booming!

With registration numbers at a record high in Domestic and Representative Leagues all around Melbourne and the NBL posting its highest ever round two attendance – basketball is booming!

“Victoria is the home of basketball – more people hit the court here each week than in any other state and [we] will help basketball keep growing in Victoria from the grassroots to elite level.”

          – Daniel Andrews

Lauren Jackson celebrates with her Opals after a Bronze Medal victory against Canada

From over ten new courts in South East Melbourne alone, to 339,300 kids currently playing basketball in Australia, it makes sense that the Aussie Hoops program has seen an increase in participation by 13.6 percent. Inspiring this push are our national teams bringing home medals in bulk across all international competitions:

•          Bronze – Opals, 2022 FIBA World Cup

•          Bronze – Boomers, 2020 Tokyo Olympics

•          Gold – Gliders, 2022 IWBF AOZ Championships

•          Gold – Rollers, 2022 IWBF AOZ Championships

•          Gold – U17 Sapphires, 2022 FIBA U16 Asia Championship

•          Gold – U17 Crocs, 2022 FIBA U16 Asia Championship

The NBA has seen an influx of Aussies in recent years with three Australian draftees in 2021/22, including pick six, Melbourne’s Josh Giddey and pick eight, Bendigo’s Dyson Daniels. That makes eleven Aussie men playing in the NBA in 2021/22.  Add to that nine women currently playing in the WNBA and Australians are representing themselves in volume on the big stage.

At Chase Basketball, our mission has always been bigger than basketball. Our belief is that what we teach on-court sets athletes up with the tools to maximise their fitness, mental health, personal development and teamwork skills.

With the growth in the sport, we couldn’t be more excited to spread positivity on a larger than ever scale.

Basketball is booming – don’t miss out!

Why are Basketball Holiday Camps so Beneficial?

Basketball camps provide players with and intense snapshot of the appropriate basketball skills and training to assist with the learning of the sport’s fundamentals.  The added and as important benefit is that children will have fun while they learn!  Coaches will work at creating positive memories associated with the sport that will last well beyond the school holiday break.

Basketball holiday camps are the perfect opportunity for children to enhance their skills, either one-on-one or in a team setting.  Instructors will focus on vital basketball skills including ball handling, shooting mechanics, speed, agility and critical defensive strategies in a fun, learning environment.

Holiday Camps are Great for Fundamental Development

School holiday basketball camps can be a critical time for expanding a child’s fundamental skill development.  When we say fundamental, we don’t just mean shooting, passing, footwork, defence, speed and agility.  Coaches will create an environment at which junior athletes will also work on teamwork, resilience, leadership, independence and hard work.  Being exposed to a variety of simulated game-like situations will help “weed out” a player’s on-court weaknesses while building on their overall game.

“Camps will allow for repetition of fundamentals which will provide the athlete with muscle memory, good playing habits and a sound base for development…”

Chase Basketball Your #1 choice for Basketball Camps these school holidays!

Chase Basketball are the experts in Basketball Camps.  With over 20 years’ experience the Chase team conduct professionally operated basketball clinics for children of all skill levels, at first class venues across Melbourne.  A combination of current players, coaches and administrators ensures that the highest quality staff with the greatest junior coaching experience lead every Chase Basketball program.  Every Chase Basketball coach is qualified and verified and brings a passion for junior sport to the court.

All-Star Qualities
  • Sportsmanship – Remember basic courtesy and good manners? Use your practices and games to reinforce these basic principles. Make sure your players can give a firm handshake with eye contact to officials and opposing coaches, as well as a high five to opposing players.
  • Teamwork – Teach your players that “we over me” is what most often leads to “us over them,” in team sports competition. Encourage your players to be selfless and supportive teammates in both losing and winning efforts.

  • Positive Attitude – Life is not fair and basketball is worse. Help your players get over it and still do what they need to do to succeed. Playing sports is one the best ways to practice overcoming adversity and preparing to handle tough times in life. Humor helps!
  • Respect – Pay it forward and get it back. How a coach interacts with other adults–coaches, parents and officials–will naturally influence the behavior of your players. Be mindful that you are a role model and are always being watched. Insist that your players respect coaches, officials and opponents–like you do. Have the courage to enforce your rules with every player and parent involved with your team.

Coaching

  • Philosophy – Want a surefire way to be a great youth coach? Lighten up! Here’s a tip. Not one of your games will be Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Billions of people don’t even know you exist, let alone feel that your practices and games are important. Recreational league and even elite travel team coaches should understand that kids want to play sports and to have FUN! Let your players figure things out. Ask questions, but don’t give instruction or answers. Stop teaching so much and give your players a chance to learn. Watching them grow will be fun for you too!
  • Communication – Have a team meeting to start the first practice of the season, or as soon as possible thereafter. Limit your postgame analysis to positive things that occurred in the game and deal with what went wrong by establishing a specific goal to work on starting at the next practice. Ask parents to delay or even eliminate the dreaded postgame interview with their child. When you need to correct a player, use the “compliment sandwich” State something positive the player did well, give a very specific correction, then restate the first positive thing.
  • Continuing Education – All-star coaching requires continuing education. I have been privileged to learn the game of basketball from seven coaches who are in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Each one of them was always striving to learn more. In your efforts to learn, make sure the substance of the material is appropriate for the skill, age and maturity level of the players that you coach.
  • Use Resources – There are several organizations that offer assistance to youth coaches. Do an online search for youth coaching information sources. Read books, watch videos and attend coaching clinics in-person whenever possible. One hour online could make you a better coach.

Practices

Play to learn, play to practice, and you will win when you play in games. Remember how much fun you had growing up when you used to just go outside and play with your friends? We advocate using the “compete to learn” approach to practice–it lets kids play and have fun while competing. This type of practice, using competitive drills, does a better job of preparing players to compete in real games. Technically, this is called transference. What you do in practice carries over into what you do in games.

  • Individual Skills – Want to improve your team’s ball handling? Games like dribble knockout are very popular. Every player must have his or her own basketball. Coach starts the game. Every player must dribble constantly, stay in-bounds and try to knock the ball away from all other players in the game. Lose control of your basketball or go out-of-bounds, and you’re eliminated. Boundaries for 10-12 players could start as half the court. After several players are eliminated, the boundary is reduced to only inside the 3-point area. Boundary is reduced again to the free-throw lane. Finally, when there are just two players left, they play the “finals” in the free throw half circle.
  • Team Concepts – Run half your offense by playing 2-on-2 or 3-on-3 restricted to one side of the floor. For example, make even (by size/ability) teams and conduct a 10-minute tournament using an action like the pick and roll. Allow for 20-second timeouts and allow players teach themselves how to make the play work.

Game Strategy

  • Keep It Simple System (KISS) – Basketball is a simple game. Keep it simple! If you are a regular reader of instructional material, you might think that you need to have lots of practice drills and a complicated or intricate system to win games. No, you don’t. Establish one or two alignments and three or four actions, and that’s it. At the youth level or even in the NBA, most successful coaches try to have their team master a few simple things. 8-10 year olds can do this successfully. Try KISS at your next practice and even in your next game, your team will show instant improvement!
  • Simple Transition Offense (Fast break/press break) – Score a lay-up in less than five seconds without dribbling.
  • Simple Half-Court Offense (Ball movement/teamwork) – Everyone must catch and make a pass before anyone can shoot!
  • The Best Offense Ever Designed – Give the ball to Michael Jordan and get out of the way. You can’t get much more simple than that! However, that is an actual “play,” as it is part of the “complicated” triangle offense. The triangle is a patterned motion offense that has several basic actions such as give and go, pick and roll and give the ball to Michael and get out of the way — otherwise known as a clearout. By the way, that offense has won nine NBA championships and you, even as a youth recreational league coach, can run some of its actions to win games in your league.

Make All-Star Memories

The experience of playing on a youth sports team can affect a child’s development as a person. How will you affect your player’s communication, cooperation, goal setting and work ethic? How will your players remember this experience 10 years from now? Most won’t remember the score.

If your team employs the ritual of getting together after every game for ice cream or pizza, takes a field trip to a college or pro game, or attends a movie together, your players will remember those good times long after they forget the score of the game. Parents sometimes enjoy these social events more than the kids.

Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world and one of the most widely viewed. It is a team sport that involves two teams of five active players each trying to score points against one another by throwing a ball through a 300 cm (10 feet) high hoop (the ‘basket’) under organised rules. It is played on both indoor and outdoor courts.

The size of the court, height of the basket, size of the basketball, and length of time that the game is played, can all vary according to the age, size and skill level of players.

Basketball is a fast moving game that involves a lot of variety, including shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding, defence and much more.

Health benefits of basketball

Basketball involves a lot of starting and stopping. While not renowned as an aerobic sport, it is still a great workout that can help you:

  • burn calories (an hour of basketball can burn 630–750 calories)
  • build endurance
  • improve balance and coordination
  • develop concentration and self-discipline
  • build up muscle.

Contary popular is simply dummy text of the printun known printer took a galley of type anambt.

Other benefits of basketball

As well as being a great way to stay fit, basketball can also:

  • help you to make new friends and see them regularly teach you about being a good team player
  • be played by people of all ages and all abilities
  • be played all year round because it’s usually an indoor sport
  • be a fun game that kids of all levels and ages can enjoy
  • be practiced alone – all you need is a ball and a hoop (and you can find a hoop in most local parks and school grounds)
  • be played and enjoyed with as few as two people (although official games require 10 players).

Getting started with basketball

Although official games of basketball require 10 players, you can play a game of basketball with just one other person. You can also go out and shoot baskets by yourself. If you want to play basketball competitively, you can become a member of a team and get involved in local competition. Check out your local sports centres and associations for information on how to join a team, or start your own.

Basketball equipment

One of the great things about the game is that apart from having a basketball, you require very little other equipment to play. However, as basketball involves a lot of running and jumping, it can also be wise to have:

  • basketball or sports shoes that provide good ankle support
  • mouth guards
  • protective knee and elbow pads.

Basketball and children

Basketball is a great way for kids to get active and have fun.  Chase Basketball is located in Victoria and runs a variety of programs for all children of all ages and skill levels.  Chase basketball is a great place to get started with your love of basketball and health!

America has a competitive high school basketball circuit, with student athletes aiming beyond high school with the hope to obtain a basketball scholarship to college. What does this mean for aspiring Aussies who
dream of their own basketball college scholarship?  How do we know where we stand against those driven Americans?  What advise are the high school kids in America receiving?  Well US Sports Camps suggests that there are 6 ways to be a top high school player and here they are:

#1

Be willing to work hard. Can you define hard work? For a top level high school and college coach, here is what hard work means. Your attitude and demeanour on the courts needs to be intense, focused, aggressive and no-nonsense. Your play should include taking charges, diving on the floor for loose balls, running the floor, constant “in your face” pressure on the ball when defending, strong attack moves to the hoop which are effective. Effective=ends with a basket.

#2

Be powerful. Great players are not pushed around. They dictate the tempo, intensity, rhythm of the game. You decide where you want to go or not go on offense, not your opponent. On defense, you decide where your opponent goes. You disrupt his or her game. Learn to use your body to impose your WILL both offensively and defensively.

#3

Be smart and understand the system. Every coach has a system and philosophy to be successful. You need to know what he or she wants. Some teams require a point guard to have no more than 3 turnovers a game. If you take too many risks on that team as a point guard you are going to sit down. Know what the coach values. Does he or she value conservative play? Does he or she want run and gun? See the big picture and learn how to play within this system.

#4

Be strong, fast and quick. These are the separators between high school athletes who will go on to the college level. One of our alum campers playing in the NBA is an amazing athlete a premier shooter, but he is getting beat on defense because his foot speed is too slow to stop a player one-on-one and even though he is 6’7″ he is not strong enough in the post. We want him to do well and encourage him to work on his strength and speed, to get a program and work it hard. Be sure to meet with a physical therapist as well as a trainer because you need to know what you must do to prevent injury. Live in the weight room during the off-season.

#5

Be humble and lead by example. Care about the team by being selfless and not concerned about your name in the paper. Do the little things well, serve others and you will be blessed.

#6

Find the separators. God has given each of us natural abilities. A girl who is 6’3″ as a sophomore, really quick, long and strong may not have good skills but she will get letters from Division 1 programs. Coaches recruit body types. If you genetically do not have a Division 1 build, you have a much harder road. You have to rise above the multitude of athletes who all have the same dream. You have to find the separators: speed, strength, wisdom, leadership, shooting, passing, impeccable skills, and the WILL to work harder than your competition.
